From Diane: "I distinctly remember my mother opening an empty pantry to pull out the last can of chicken-noodle soup. She split it between my sister and I. I asked her 'Momma, what are you gonna eat' and she said 'Oh, I'm not hungry honey...now you girls eat.' Then, I'd lay in bed at night and not dare complain about my hunger pains cause I didn't want her to feel bad...

There were many days I can remember going to school and being ashamed of what was in (or not in) my lunchbox. I would make excuses around other kids at the lunch table who would make fun of my pitiful contents and just say 'I'm not hungry' or I would turn down their occasional offers from their lunch boxes out of embarrassment...

We moved around a lot, too, and so I was always the new kid in the numerous schools I attended. I was embarrassed about my skinny frame and would refuse to wear short sleeves, even in the summer...

My heart goes out to any child who experiences hunger and I hope we can do something about it in our small corner of the world!" 

This year, nearly 1 out of 5 kids in America will face hunger. But, there is hope! Many families are not even aware of partners all across the country, right in their own communities, that have food available to them. There are options besides food stamps and embarrassing scenarios. There is no shame in this...with so many foreclosures, so many suddenly unemployed, this hits hard-working families of all walks of life. Donate! Get involved!
