I am writing because I am a constituent of yours and a supporter of Share Our Strength. As part of the No Kid Hungry Campaign, I am writing to implore you to protect SNAP (formerly known as food stamps) and other critical child nutrition programs from federal budget cuts.

I understand that times are tough in Congress, and finding more than $1 trillion in cuts will be hard. But times are tough out here, as well, and there is no single program or institution that does more to protect kids from the impact of poverty than SNAP. Indeed, many consider it to be the greatest anti-poverty program in American history.

Record numbers of children and families are depending on SNAP right now, with unemployment at historic highs and recovery nowhere in sight. In 2010, SNAP alone was what lifted 1.7 million American children above the poverty line. There couldn't be a worse time to take away what for many kids is their only access to nutritious meals.

I know the responsibility facing Congress is immense, and I don't envy you and your colleagues the task of identifying these cuts. But do know this: the very first--and the longest lasting--impact of cuts to SNAP and other child nutrition programs would be to harm millions of American kids not just at meal time, but at test time and at play time. For a long time.

We respect your goal of balancing the budget. We ask that you don't balance it on the backs of kids who need us.
