If anyone needs a reason to gather around a restaurant meal, the Great American Dine Out is it. From September 19-25, thousands of restaurants around the country will be ready to welcome you and your group to dine out and help end childhood hunger in America. It makes getting together over good food an even richer experience when part of the check goes to help make sure no child in America grows up hungry.

Try some of these ideas for turning your Great American Dine Out into something extra-special, and use our zip code search map to find the restaurants to host your events:

Start with the obvious occasions:

  • Birthdays, anniversaries, comings-of-age, date night, lunch with the girls, guys' night out, family night.
  • Business meetings, coffee breaks, lunch with workmates, after-hours happy hours.
  • Sunday brunch.
  • Game-watching (football, baseball, pro or college) or post-game celebrations for the active athletes in your crowd.
  • Social club get-togehters.

Exercise the "social" in social media

  • Create your own Great American Dine Out event on Facebook.
  • Have a virtual Great American Dine Out by updating your Facebook status with each of your real-time Great American Dine Out experiences.
  • Post pictures and videos of you dining out at a participating restaurant on your Facebook and Twitter pages.
  • Join in the Great American Dine Out Tweet-a-Thon September 20, and keep it going all week long.
  • Host Meetups and Tweetups.
  • Throw a FourSquare Swarm Badge party.

Create your own real-time events, and add a friendly challenge.

  • Compete with your friends or family members to see who can dine out at the most participating restaurants or host the biggest Great American Dine Out party.
  • Plan a progressive dine-around at participating restaurants in your area - a different restaurant for each course, for example.
  • Start a chain of events. Early in the week of September 19, host friends and family at your own Great American Dine Out gathering. Challenge them to host their own such get-together and to challenge their guests do the same. Compare notes at the end of the week to see who did the best job.
